About Digital Hammurabi

Making the ancient world accessible —
with heart, humour,
and a whole lot of cuneiform.

Digital Hammurabi was born from a simple idea: the ancient Near East is fascinating — and everyone should have the chance to understand it. Why does the Acropolis get all the glory when there are ziggurats just waiting to be appreciated?

We’re here to open that door. To strip away the jargon. To make the oldest texts in human history feel a little less intimidating, a little more human, and a lot more fun.

We believe that learning about the past shouldn’t be reserved for dusty lecture halls or gatekept by people with multiple degrees. You don’t need to know what a determinative is, or how how to spell "Nebuchadnezzar" in Akkadian. You just need to be curious.

Who we are

Megan Lewis

Megan Lewis

Megan is the voice behind our YouTube channel and podcast, where she breaks down ancient history, texts, and languages with clarity, warmth, and the occasional metaphorical eye-roll at academic snobbery.

She holds a B.A. and M.Phil. in Ancient History and Assyriology from Birmingham University (UK), and an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from Johns Hopkins University. She completed all but the dissertation in a Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins before deciding that her time (and sanity) might be better spent making ancient knowledge available to more people. She hopes to return and finish the doctorate someday — but in the meantime, she’s got a camera, a microphone, and a mission. Sometimes she even remembers to turn the microphone on!

Megan handles the day-to-day running of Digital Hammurabi — from producing content to organising courses and collaborating with guest teachers. She is also the host of the Misquoting Jesus Podcast with Dr. Bart Ehrman, and The Reading Party Podcast with Alexandra Henning of The Ozymandias Project.

Josh Bowen

Josh is a specialist in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern literature. Apart from his bow-ties and spectacular beard, he’s best known for his Atheist’s Handbook to the Old Testament series, which tackles hot-button issues like slavery, prophecy, and violence — all with scholarly depth and real-world relevance. He’s passionate about helping people understand what these ancient texts actually say (and what they don’t).

He holds a Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, (Assyriology major with a minor in Hebrew Bible), an M.A. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, both from The Johns Hopkins University, and a Th.M. in Old Testament Studies from Capital Bible Seminary. He won the Fulbright Scholarship in 2014, and was named as a Deutscher Akademischer Austasch Dienst recipient, also in 2014.

Josh is a dedicated researcher who has made it his mission to help people understand the cultural context of the Hebrew Bible, and can most often be found in TikTok or Discord, answering questions and enjoying a good conversation.
